Braunschweig

An ancient trading city with a modern research nexus

Located in Lower Saxony, Braunschweig (or Brunswick as it's sometimes known) was an independent state for centuries, and part of the Hanseatic League of northern trading ports. A major center of the German Enlightenment in the 18th century, the city has a proud cultural and educational heritage - and was the location for the first staging of Goethe's Faust.

Studying and working in Braunschweig

Braunschweig is famous for its educational opportunities. The largest institution in town is the Technical University of Braunschweig (TU), which was founded in 1745. A member of the TU9 alliance of elite German universities, TU is a world-leading engineering center, working closely with Braunschweig's vehicle manufacturing, sustainable energy, and aeronautics sectors.

The efforts of TU ensures that Braunschweig is a genuine research hub, counting as the most R&D intensive German city. However,  Braunschweig University of Art means that opportunities aren't limited to science and technology. Both schools cater for international students. TU offers Bachelor's and Master's courses tailored to non-German speakers, and around 1 in 14 students at the university come from outside Germany.
