The birthplace of an empire, and a bewitching historical city

In the 8th century, Aachen became the most powerful city in Europe, as Charlemagne's imperial capital. Although it didn't remain a center of power, the Imperial Cathedral was a place to crown emperors well into the 17th century. Now it's a fascinating, medium-sized city near the French and Belgian borders, and a wonderful place to study.

Modern Aachen has around 250,000 people, and over 1 in 5 of them are students. It's a cosmopolitan city, with over 10,000 international students, and over 20,000 foreign-born inhabitants. It's a cultural hub, thanks to its historical architecture and the KIMIKO Isle of Art Festival.

Studying and Working in Aachen

Aachen has two major universities: the prestigious University of Aachen (RWTH), and the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (AcUAS). It also hosts a campus of the Cologne University of Music, and the German Army's Technical School.

RWTH Aachen is the largest institution with more than 10,000 international students. It specializes in computer science, engineering, and technology, with tight links to local industry. It's one of Germany's leading centers for innovation.

AcUAS is the top-ranked German technical school in electrical and mechanical engineering, with opportunities to build connections to manufacturing companies. International students must undertake a "Freshman Year" to introduce them to the German language.

Students can expect a high quality technical education in one of Germany's most historic cities. The city's location allows easy travel to Cologne, Paris, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
