Bremerhaven

One of the busiest port cities in Germany

Created as a specialist port for the ancient trading city of Bremen, Bremerhaven is now a bustling city in its own right. The port was the HQ of Germany's navy in both World Wars, then served as a US naval base for over 40 years. Nowadays, it is a huge container port, handling German exports to markets around the world.

Founded in 1827, Bremerhaven is home to 113,000 people, and remains oriented around the sea, whether in shipping or marine research. Home to around 4,000 students, the city offers some fascinating marine museums, and the unique appeal of "Sail Bremerhaven" - the world's largest sailing ship festival.

Studying and Working in Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven has two universities. The largest is the University of Applied Sciences (HS-Bremerhaven), which was created in 1975, and hosts 3,000 students. It specializes in engineering and management, as well as information technology - all subjects that are in demand from local logistics and manufacturing companies.

The other university is the Alfred Wegener Institute - a globally famous research center for studying climate and marine science. It tends to host postgraduate researchers from other universities, while HS-Bremerhaven teaches at Bachelor's and Master's level. HS-Bremerhaven is also well set up for international students, with English language courses in Cruise Tourism, Embedded Systems Design, and Process Engineering - and plenty of language assistance if required.
