Located on the Baltic Sea in Northern Germany, Wismar is a port city in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, the city is known for its architecture, with buildings from periods as diverse as the North German Gothic period in the 14th century to Art Nouveau in the 19th. As a port city, it is well known for shipbuilding and is a trading center.

Although the city has only around 40,000 residents, it is filled with history and culture. It received its civic rights in 1229 and was originally a part of the Hanseatic League. For two centuries it was under Swedish rule, before becoming German in the late 19th century. It has long been an affluent port city with grand buildings and an enormous market square.

Wismar has one higher education institution: Hochschule Wismar (University of Applied Sciences, Technology, Business and Design). Founded in 1908, the university offers 50+ courses across three faculties: engineering, business and design. Student life has a real buzz about it, with plenty of affordable bars, restaurants, cinemas and water sports available.
