The capital city of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel is a major maritime center. The grand harbor area, home to the city’s museums and historic buildings is Kiel’s most beautiful area, whilst the busy modern shopping area is popular with younger residents. Each year crowds flock for Kiel's famous sailing festival.

The University of Kiel is one of Germany’s oldest educational institutions, dating from 1665. Officially named the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, it is a German university of excellence. Popular areas of study include medicine and science. A total of 12 Nobel prize winners have been affiliated with the University of Kiel including Max Planck. Students can enjoy a range of extracurricular pastimes such as sailing, which is a hugely popular activity in Kiel. Students can also take advantage of frequent ferry services to Sweden and Denmark.
Employment rates in Kiel are high for graduates. The maritime industry continues to be a major employer in the city although the service sector and transport industry are both also key areas of employment. The university's career center supports graduates and final year students as they progress from their studies to finding employment.
