Iserlohn is in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and has the largest population and area of all towns in the Sauerland region. Iserlohn showcases a variety of architecture and styles, from the Gothic altar in the Supreme city church to the Baroque town palace of the city museum and the Pancratius church dating back to 985.

The university is among the top research facilities in Germany in terms of output. There is also a Südwestfalen University of Applied Sciences campus in Iserlohn with courses in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences.
Iserlohn is considered an internationally-renowned economic center of South Westphalia, with 150 global market-leading companies based there. The majority of companies in Iserlohn are categorized as professional, technical, and scientific services or as part of the motor industry.
