A global scientific powerhouse and historical capital

For centuries, Darmstadt was the capital of independent Hesse, one of the many Grand Duchies that made up Germany before unification. This brought wealth, power, and some superb architecture. However, the city's past is being rapidly eclipsed by its modern-day research expertise. Officially designated a "City of Science", Darmstadt's academics have launched spacecraft, discovered elements, and developed world-changing drugs.

Studying and Working in Darmstadt

Above all else, Darmstadt is a city of science. There are two major universities: the University of Applied Sciences, and the larger Technical University of Darmstadt (TU). TU is the most prestigious, having pioneered electrical engineering, and constantly making an impact in chemistry, cryptography, IT, and robotics.

TU has a larger than average community of international students (18%) and attracts students from across the world. English language Master's are commonly taught, and exchanges with other European institutions are routine. Career opportunities range from positions at the Fraunhofer Society (a major particle research lab), to working with pharma giant Merck, and the region's thriving high-tech finance, engineering, and IT sectors.
