A maritime city home to the oldest university in the Baltics
Situated on the Baltic Coast at the estuary of the River Warnow, the city is home to a historically significant port. It was a major facet of the Hanseatic League and still has the official name, The Hanseatic City of Rostock.
It is the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and boasts a 600-year-old university. The city has a largely industrial landscape but beyond this are small quarters of historic beauty such as the Market Square and the maritime houses at Warnemünde beach.

Rostock has a population of 208,000, of which 15,000 are students enrolled at one of the city's 2 universities. Most of these students attend the historic University of Rostock that was founded in 1419.
Studying and Working in Rostock
The small but historically significant University of Rostock is noted for a wide choice of medical degrees taught at the University Hospital, as well as programs in life sciences, chemistry and humanities. The city is also home to the small University of Music and Theater and the two universities together manage Rostock Student Services, which offers support to all students, especially international ones.
The maritime industry continues to be one of the city’s biggest employers with huge numbers employed in shipbuilding. Other major employers include high tech, services and tourism.
