Bingen

An ancient Roman center, and birthplace of medieval master musicians

Located in the Rhineland-Palatinate province, Bingen was once a transport terminus in Roman Germany, before becoming a major medieval cultural center.

Its fame then was largely thanks to the efforts of Hildegard von Bingen, whose musical works continue to be performed across the world. Nowadays, it's a pleasant river city, with many beautiful gardens, and a fine university.

Bingen isn't large, but it has a fascinating history, packed with poets, musicians, grizzly deaths, and architectural achievements. The city is home to 26,000 people, including around 2,400 students, and is gathered around the River Rhine - where a Garden Festival takes place on the banks every summer.

Studying and working in Bingen

Bingen only has one university - the University of Applied Sciences Bingen (TH Bingen). Created in 1897, the university focuses on life sciences and information technology. Both faculties suit the economy of the Rhineland-Palatinate, which includes prospering chemical, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and machinery design sectors (not to mention world-class wine growing).

International students are welcome, and some courses (such as the "Renewable Resources" module) are taught in English. However, most Bachelor's and Master's courses will require a German language certificate. When accepted, students can expect to settle into Bingen's small-town atmosphere easily, while career opportunities should be easy to come by thanks to TH Bingen's many industrial partners.
