Qualifications for First University Degree/Undergraduate Programs

It's necessary to have a high GPA in your academics to get accepted into one of these institutions. Apart from this, you need to submit language proficiency test results for English or Germany, whichever language you wish to study the course in. The higher the scores, the better your chances of admission.

In addition to having completed one of the above secondary school qualifications, applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in German. This can be done by providing a valid Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) - DSH score of at least two - or TestDaF certificate - TestDaF score of at least four.

Other general requirements would include the following: 

  • A certified copy of your high-school diploma or secondary school certificate and other relevant qualifications in the original language is equivalent to German 'Abitur'.
  • Proof of practical training or aptitude assessment depending on the undergraduate degree course chosen.
  • A unique selection procedure for NC (Numerus Clausus) courses will be conducted. Apart from the general requirements, a curriculum vitae (CV), letter of motivation, and any internships/voluntary or extracurricular activities are required.
  • A completed application form
  • A translated overview of your course modules and grades
  • A passport photo
  • A copy of your passport (personal information and photo ID page)

 

 

Qualifications for Graduate Programs

The general requirement for a graduate degree is having a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification from an internationally recognized institution.

Apart from this, you will need to prove your proficiency in the German language by providing a valid DSH or TestDaF certificate. Other foreign language skills with at least B1/B2 or C1/C2 level may be required as proof of language skills, depending on your course of study.

Other requirements include: 

  • A certified copy of your undergraduate diploma or Bachelor's degree certificate (officially authenticated and translated into German or English) and any other relevant qualifications in the original language.
  • Proof of practical training or pre-study internships is proof of passing the aptitude test.
  • In addition to the general requirements, a curriculum vitae (CV), letter of motivation, and copies of any internships/voluntary work/extracurricular activities are required for NC courses.
  • A completed application form
  • A translated overview of your course modules and grades
  • A passport photo
  • A copy of your passport (personal information and photo ID page)
  • Proof of payment for the application fee (non-refundable)

 

 

Qualifications for Doctoral Programs

The general requirement for a doctoral degree is having a Master's degree or equivalent qualification from an internationally recognized institution.

In addition to the general requirements, a university degree with a high to a very exceptional level in the field would be a primary requirement. In some cases, a Bachelor's degree may be sufficient to admit you as a Ph.D. student.

  • For international students, language skills are not necessary. Proof must only be provided if the dissertation is written in German.
  • To enroll as a doctoral student, you must first be accepted into the doctoral program or by the Doctoral Committee of the faculty where you wish to study for your doctorate.

 

 

How to best prepare for the Admissions Process

Your grades are the most important factor for admission into a German university.

  • To improve your chances of getting into a good university, it is advisable to take extra subjects (especially STEM), get involved in extracurricular activities, and try to gain some work experience.
  • It is also essential to start preparing for the language tests early. The sooner you start, the better your chances of getting a high score.
  • Suppose you plan to apply to a prestigious university or one of the NC courses. In that case, it is advisable to consult an admissions counselor to help you with the application process.
