The birthplace of Karl Marx
Trier is in the far west of Germany on the border with Luxembourg, which lies just under 50 kilometers to the southwest. A part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Trier is known as the birthplace of the philosopher Karl Marx and as a producer of Mosel wine. The city is known for its Roman ruins, including a set of Imperial Baths, the Constantine Basilica and the Trier Amphitheater.

The University of Trier was first established in 1473, only to be closed for 172 years between 1798 and 1970. In its modern iteration, the university focuses on the study of the social sciences and humanities, with departments as diverse as Egyptology and Computer Science.
The Trier University of Applied Sciences places greater focus on the study of engineering, design, business, informatics, and environmental studies, whereas the Academy of European Law is a specialist center for the study of European law, training lawyers in debate, and promoting the understanding of European law.
Although the universities dominate the city's economy, there are also jobs to be had in logistics at Trier Harbour, or with major companies like Japan Tobacco International.
