An attractive city that was a major center of the Reformation

Located in the state of Thuringia in eastern Germany, Schmalkalden is a small city with an ancient past. Founded in the 800s, the city was one of the major players in the 16th-century protestant Reformation. The picturesque old town reflects this golden age, with red-roofed churches, elegant markets, and plenty of 500-year-old homes which give the town a timeless, old-world atmosphere.
