An attractive city that was a major center of the Reformation

Located in the state of Thuringia in eastern Germany, Schmalkalden is a small city with an ancient past. Founded in the 800s, the city was one of the major players in the 16th-century protestant Reformation. The picturesque old town reflects this golden age, with red-roofed churches, elegant markets, and plenty of 500-year-old homes which give the town a timeless, old-world atmosphere.

Studying and Working in Schmalkalden

The only higher education institution in the city is Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences (HS-Schmalkalden). The school focuses on practical degree subjects, including business administration, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering, and has excellent research and teaching facilities for science-based degrees. 17 Bachelor's and 7 Master's level degrees are available to choose from.

International students are always welcome, although TestDaf qualifications will be required for all admissions. The university itself is licensed to teach TestDaf, which makes achieving the required level more convenient. After studying, students can expect opportunities in Thuringia's thriving health and biotech, financial services, or engineering sectors.
