Located in the far southeast of Germany in the state of Lower Bavaria, Passau is an ancient town (perhaps first settled as far back as the 2nd century BC) known for being the place where three rivers meet: the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. Thanks to its age, the city is also known for its architecture, with striking buildings from both the Gothic and Baroque periods surviving to the present day.
Passau is relatively small with only 50,000 inhabitants, and the town is dominated by the university where 12,000 students study, nearly a quarter of the town's population. The university is regarded as having an international outlook, and has more than 236 partnerships with foreign universities.
The University of Passau is well thought of across Germany and the world. It was only founded in the 1970s, but is ranked 16th in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Young University Rankings. The university focuses on tackling big international issues, with a research focus on digitalization, Europe, migration and sustainable development, and an interdisciplinary outlook. It is also highly international, with students coming from more than 100 countries around the globe to study there.
Although the university is the biggest driver of Passau's economy, there are also jobs to be had in brewing, and the manufacture of bicycles, organs, clothing and bells.
