Located in the state of Lower Saxony in the central north of Germany, Lüneberg lies about 30 miles south of the major port city of Hamburg. Sometimes known as Lunenberg in English, the area was likely first settled around 150,000 years ago, although there has not been a continuous presence since then, with the modern Lüneberg founded sometime around the year 956.

The town is known for its medieval architecture, as it was one of the few places in North Germany not to have had its town center destroyed in the Second World War. Lüneberg has picturesque market streets that feel a little like Amsterdam, and buildings remain in the town from as far back as 1370.

Studying and Working in Lüneberg

Lüneberg is home to the Leuphana University of Lüneberg. A relatively modern university, it is unique among German universities for being organized into schools rather than faculties and offering a Liberal Arts Program, where students can study subjects from across the board during their undergraduate degree. The campus is also climate-neutral.

The town has a growing economy, with a number of medium-sized businesses based there. These included the IT firm Werum IT Solutions, car interior manufacturer Johnson Controls and DeVauGe Gesundkostwerk, one of Germany’s largest manufacturers of vegetarian food.

Lüneberg is also blessed with a large cultural offering, with a number of amateur theaters in the town and a series of excellent museums.
