A university city and center for lake activities

Located in the northwest German province of North Rhine-Westphalia, Meschede is a city of around 30,000 people. As host to a branch of South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (FH-SWF), the community punches well above its weight in engineering, agriculture, and information technology. Leisure is just as important to the area. Nearby Lake Hennesee is a popular location for recreational water sports, and the surrounding region attracts lovers of hiking and nature.

Meschede isn't a large city at all, with just 30,000 people. The 1,800 university students form a significant part of the community. There are several museums in town, including the wonderful Heimatmuseum, which showcases peasant traditions. Life in Meschede is tied to the dynamism of the Ruhr region - a globally important industrial area.

Studying and Working in Meschede

Meschede is a welcoming and laid back place to study. There aren't many distractions, but the town isn't cut off from the wider society or economy. The Meschede campus of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences has close links to the Ruhr's engineering, agriculture, and digital economy. It's also in touch with nature, with the Hennesee offering water-skiing, boating, windsurfing, and more.

In keeping with the practical attitude of the city's people, the university tends to focus on preparing students for professional lives. The university also has a strongly international orientation with connections across the globe. However, most courses are taught exclusively in German, other than a few exceptions including Informatics and Systems Engineering degrees. So most international applicants will need to past TestDat qualifications.
