Tübingen has a rich history in the field of Linguistics, and today, more linguists are exploring a broader range of linguistic aspects than ever before. This growth is largely due to the remarkable success of Tübingen linguists in securing research funding over the past two decades. The M.A. program in English Linguistics mirrors this depth and interdisciplinary approach. The program covers core areas such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics. It also offers specializations in second language acquisition, information structure, language processing, experimental syntax, formal semantics, psycholinguistics, and historical linguistics. While the focus is on the English language, the curriculum is enriched by cross-linguistic comparisons and interdisciplinary methods, including experimental and literary studies. Students can combine courses from English Linguistics with selected M.A. courses from other Linguistics departments. A key feature of the program is the emphasis on independent studies. From the start, students are encouraged to design and conduct their own research projects. With guidance from the faculty, they can contribute to ongoing research in the English department, often leading to joint publications with staff.
