Although Würzburg’s history dates back to 1000 BC when Celtics built a fortress on top of Marienberg, the city was officially founded in 742 as the bishopric of Würzburg. Würzburg is proud of being an "old young city", as it is one of the youngest cities in Germany with an average age of 41 years old.
