Angela Merkel's old Bundestag seat and a major industrial center

Located right in the northeastern tip of Germany, Stralsund lies in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in which it is the fourth-largest city. The city has had a prosperous economy since as early as the 13th century, and as such has many beautiful old Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Its town center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.

With a population of around 60,000, Stralsund is a relatively small city in the grand scheme of things, but is home to a small but well-regarded University of Applied Sciences. Founded in 1234, the main sights of the city include the Gothic Town Hall, various late medieval churches and the beautiful Old Market Square.

Studying and Working in Stralsund

Founded in 1991, the University of Applied Sciences has three faculties: electrical engineering and computer science, economics, and mechanical engineering. The university has a particularly well-regarded economics department, with the program thought of as one of the best for connections with industry and work placements. Student life is buzzing, with lots of societies at the university, including computer workshops and a yearly open-air concert organized by students.

Stralsund's economy reflects its position as a port, with shipbuilding a major industry. The main company is Volkswerft shipyard, which produces container ships. Other major industries are the heavy machinery business, and tourism, with Stralsund's medieval city center and seaside location attracting many visitors each year.
