Mainz is best known as the home of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the modern printing press, and it was in Mainz that the Gutenberg Bible was first printed.

Although damaged in World War II by bombing raids, Mainz remains an economic hub in the region and a center for the wine trade, with 6 of the 13 major German wine regions located in the state around the city.

A city of around 220,000 inhabitants, Mainz is for the most part strikingly modern, with the vast majority of the city as it is today built after the Second World War. It also has a particularly well-regarded university – Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz – which was first established in 1477 and is thought of as one of the best universities in Germany.

Studying and Working in Mainz

Mainz has three universities, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the University of Applied Sciences Mainz and the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz. The Gutenberg University is known for its humanities and social sciences provision, with well-regarded philosophy, political science and theology departments, where the University of Applied Sciences is known for Engineering, Design and Business. The Catholic University is a much smaller university for Catholic students of the region.

Apart from the wine industry, Mainz is also host to Schott AG, one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world, and Werner & Mertz, a major chemical company.
