The town of Geislingen an der Steige is located in the South German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The phrase an der Steige translates as 'on the climb' and relates to the town's historic mountainous position along a key trade route from Germany to the Mediterranean. The town is home to a number of beautiful half-timbered houses, typical of the Alpine region, and also enjoys excellent rail links with the cities of Goppingen, Esslingen and Stuttgart.
Geislingen an der Steige has a population of 28,000 with roughly 2,500 students enrolled at the only public university. The first written record of Geislingen as a settlement dates from 1237.
The town is home to one of the campuses of the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences. The Geislingen campus is located across a number of buildings in the southeast of the town center. Students in Geislingen enjoy centrally located accommodation and therefore easy access to bars and shops of the pedestrianized center. Students also enjoy fast access to Swabian Alps, where skiing and hiking are both hugely popular.
The university has excellent links with regional business, helping graduates find suitable employment at the end of their studies. The area is one of Germany's hubs for luxury goods manufacturing and high-end cars. Employment rates in the region are high. One of the town's most significant employers is WMF, a historic German tableware manufacturer. Other notable regional employers include Porsche, Hugo Boss, HP, IBM, and Mercedes.
