dMAT Exam for Indian Students: Requirements and Exemptions Explained

Contents

The dMAT is a new test added to the APS process for some Indian students applying for a master's in Germany. It starts with the Summer Semester 2027 intake.

If your degree is in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management, this may apply to you. Many students are not affected at all. And even if you take it, a low score does not fail your APS. Here is a clear, honest guide to what the dMAT is, who needs it, who is exempt, and what to do next.

In short: The dMAT (digital Master Test) is an academic aptitude test run by g.a.s.t. From the Summer Semester 2027 intake, it becomes a required part of the APS documentation for Indian master's applicants whose bachelor's is in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management. It costs 150 euros, it does not replace APS verification, and a low score does not automatically fail you.

What is the dMAT?

The dMAT stands for digital Master Test. It is a standardized academic aptitude test for master's applicants. From 2026, it will become a new part of the APS process for Indian students.

Two organizations are involved, and it helps to keep them separate:

APS India

  • Checks that your documents and degree are genuine
  • Issues your APS certificate
  • Does not run the dMAT test

g.a.s.t.

  • Runs the dMAT test
  • Handles registration, payment, and test centers
  • Issues your dMAT certificate

The dMAT measures how you reason and apply what you have learned. It does not test memorized facts. It is not a language test, and it is not a university entrance exam.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

Interactive tool to check whether a degree falls under the German dMAT requirement for the Summer 2027 intake and later

Check if the dMAT applies to your degree

APS India makes the final decision, not this tool. They look at the exact name on your degree certificate, not the name you normally use. This tool is only a guide. For the real answer, always check the official APS list.

You need to take the dMAT if both of these are true. First, you apply for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later. Second, your previous degree falls in one of these three field groups, as confirmed by APS India:

Field group Examples of covered degrees
Engineering B.E. or B.Tech in a clear engineering branch, such as Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Computer Science and Engineering, or Electronics and Communication Engineering
Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics B.Com and its specializations, Accounting, Finance, Banking, Taxation, and Economics degrees such as B.A. or B.Sc. Economics
Business, Management BBA, BBM, BMS, Business Administration, Management Studies, and related fields

Source: APS India dMAT field list, Version 1.0, 29 June 2026. See the full affected fields list.

Important: The name of your degree is not enough on its own. APS India decides based on the official title, branch, or specialization on your certificate and transcripts. A word like "Management" or "Technology" in the title does not decide the outcome. If your degree is mixed or unclear, check the official list first.

Who Does Not Need to Take the dMAT?

This is the part many students miss. The dMAT does not apply to everyone. If you hear that studying in Germany got harder and feel like giving up, read this section first. You may not be affected at all.

Applicant Groups That Are Exempt

According to APS India, these applicants do not need the dMAT under the current rules:

  • Students applying for a bachelor's program in Germany
  • PhD applicants
  • Applicants whose previous degree is not in one of the three affected field groups
  • Applicants in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership program

The exchange and partnership exemption is worth a closer look. If you apply through an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership program, you are exempt. You submit a confirmation from your home institution, the German partner, or the program coordinator, along with your group number, together with your APS documents.

Transitional Rules for Applications Already in Progress

If your APS application was already in progress before the change, you are likely protected. APS India states you are exempt if any of these apply:

  • You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026
  • You shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026
  • You already completed the APS process and received your APS certificate

Students applying for the Winter Semester 2026/27 intake are also not affected. The first dMAT certificates are only available from 12 October 2026, so the requirement starts with the Summer Semester 2027.

Fields That Are Not Automatically Included

Some popular fields are not automatically covered. They are only included if APS India classifies the official degree as engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management. Based on the official field list, these are not automatically included:

IT and Computer Science

  • B.Sc. Computer Science
  • BCA and Computer Applications
  • B.Sc. Information Technology
  • Standalone AI, Data Science, or Cyber Security

Life Sciences and Biotech

  • B.Sc. Biotechnology
  • B.Sc. Medical Biotechnology
  • Microbiology
  • Life Sciences

Health and Pharmacy

  • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Medical and Nursing degrees
  • Physiotherapy and other health sciences

Other Fields

  • Architecture and Planning
  • Law and Education
  • Pure Sciences, Arts, and Humanities
  • Agriculture, unless awarded as Agricultural Engineering

Important: There is one key difference for computer science. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), awarded as an engineering degree, is covered. A standalone B.Sc. Computer Science or BCA is not automatically covered. The wording on your official degree decides this, not the subject alone.

Key Dates for the First dMAT Cycle

The first dMAT in India follows this schedule, as published by g.a.s.t. Test seats are given first come, first served, so early registration matters.

Milestone Date
Registration opens 29 June 2026
Registration deadline 15 September 2026
Test date 26 September 2026
Certificate available online 12 October 2026
Applies to intake Summer Semester 2027 and later

The test is offered at selected licensed centers across India. These include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. The final list of centers appears during registration.

How Much Does the dMAT Cost?

The dMAT fee is €150, paid to g.a.s.t. during registration. This is a separate cost from the APS fee, which is €225. Plan for both if the dMAT applies to you.

What the dMAT Looks Like: Format and Scoring

The dMAT has two parts, as described by g.a.s.t. The core module measures general thinking and analytical skills through three subtests. The subject module for the APS process is the General Academic Module. It checks how you apply those skills to academic problems.

The test is in English. Questions are single-choice. The test takes about three and a half hours, with a break in the middle. Your result comes on two scales:

dMAT Score

  • A number from 0 to 200
  • The average score is 100

Percentile Rank

  • Shows how you did against other test-takers
  • A rank of 70 means you scored better than 70% of them

How the dMAT Fits Into the APS Process

If the dMAT applies to you, the order of steps matters. You take the dMAT before you submit your APS documents. Then you send the dMAT certificate together with your APS application.

How anabin, APS, and the dMAT Fit Together

Students often mix these three up. They do different jobs, and anabin comes first. anabin is Germany's official database of recognized foreign universities and degrees. It confirms whether your university and qualification are accepted in Germany at all.

  • anabin: is your university and degree recognized in Germany?
  • APS: are your documents genuine and verified?
  • dMAT: the new aptitude test inside APS, for the affected fields only.

Check your university and degree in anabin before you register for the dMAT. This step comes first for a reason. A good dMAT score does not make up for a degree that is not recognized in anabin. If anabin does not recognize your university, passing the dMAT changes nothing, so clear that check first. For the full recognition process, including the updated marks requirement for Indian applicants, see our APS India guide.

Your Steps, In Order

1

Check if you are affected

Confirm your intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later and your degree is in an affected field.

2

Check your anabin status

Confirm your university and degree in the anabin database before you register. You can read our full anabin guide here.

3

Register and take the dMAT

Register with g.a.s.t., pay the fee, and sit the test at your chosen center.

4

Submit APS documents with your certificate

Include your dMAT certificate with your APS application documents.

5

APS verifies and issues your certificate

Your dMAT result is shown on your APS certificate. Then you apply to universities and for your visa.

There is one helpful exception on timing. If you completed your APS online registration on or after 29 June 2026, you may submit your other APS documents first and add the dMAT certificate later, once it is ready. APS India completes the process only after the certificate arrives.

What the dMAT Does Not Do

It helps to know the limits of this test. This is where most worry comes from, and much of that worry is not needed. According to APS India:

  • A low dMAT score does not automatically get your APS certificate refused.
  • The dMAT does not replace APS document verification.
  • It does not replace anabin or the formal recognition of your degree.
  • It does not guarantee admission to a German university, and it does not automatically cause rejection.

German universities decide on their own how much weight to give the dMAT. It is one document among many in your application. Think of it as a chance to show your academic readiness, not a barrier.

How to Register for the dMAT

Registration, payment, and test center booking are all handled by g.a.s.t. Here is how it works:

  • Go to the g.a.s.t. registration portal.
  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  • Choose an available test center. Seats fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Pay the 150 euro fee online and save the confirmation.
  • Sit the test on 26 September 2026.
  • Download your certificate from the g.a.s.t. portal from 12 October 2026.

Important: Missing the dMAT registration deadline can delay your admission by a full semester. If you plan to apply for Summer Semester 2027, register early and book your test center as soon as you can.

What This Means for Your Study Plans

The dMAT is a real change, but for most students it is one more step, not a wall. First, find out if it even applies to you. Check your intake, your field, and whether an exemption fits your case. If it does apply, the timeline is clear and the steps are manageable.
