April - May
Entrance exam preparation
Most German universities require proof of language proficiency, either in English or German, depending on the language of instruction of your chosen program.
Start preparing for the relevant language exams early, as slots can fill up quickly. Depending on your study program, you may also need to prepare for other entrance exams such as GMAT, GRE, or subject-specific tests.
June - July
Take the exams
After all that preparation, now is the perfect time to take your language and entrance exams. Book your exam slots early as popular test centres fill up fast, especially during summer.
TIP: Keep in mind that some exams take several weeks to deliver results. Plan ahead so your scores arrive in time for application deadlines.
August - October
Prepare your documents
Now it's time to prepare the other documents required by the university of your choice. The list includes but is not limited to:
- A completely filled-out university application form.
- Academic transcript or pre-transcript.
- Valid passport and passport photo.
- Letter of Motivation.
- Letter of Recommendation.
- Certified translations of documents where needed.
Keep an eye on application deadlines too. While most universities set their summer semester deadline in January, some programs and portals like uni-assist have earlier cutoffs. Check your specific program's deadline now so you're not caught off guard.
TIP: Use the StudyBuddy Checklist to track every step of your application and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
November - December
Submit your applications
With the January deadline approaching, now is the time to finalise and send your university applications. Aim to submit at least 8 weeks before the deadline to allow for processing time.
If you're applying to more than one university, stay organised. Track which applications have been submitted, which need follow-up documents, and watch for any requests from admissions offices.
TIP: Before you hit submit, review every document for completeness and formatting. Incomplete applications are one of the most common reasons for rejection.
January
Deadline for the Summer Semester
Save the date: January 15th
This is the general deadline for international applicants at most German universities for the summer semester. Some programs and portals like uni-assist may have earlier cutoffs, so always verify with your chosen institution.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to study in Germany?
While most public universities in Germany don't charge tuition fees, you'll still need to cover living expenses. For your visa application, a blocked account with at least €11,904 (€992/month) as of 2026 is required. You should also budget for semester contribution fees, accommodation, transport, and daily expenses.
Do I need an APS certificate to apply?
If you're from China, India, or Vietnam, you'll likely need an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate to verify your academic qualifications. This process can take several months, so if you're aiming for the summer semester, start as early as possible to avoid delays in your application.
How do I find out how to apply for a program?
Application processes vary depending on the university and your country of origin. Generally, there are two main ways to apply:
- Directly through the university's own application portal.
- Through uni-assist, a centralised service used by many German universities to process international applications. Check the university's website to see if they require uni-assist.
Not sure where to start? The Expatrio StudyBuddy Program Database lets you explore 13,000+ study programs and see each program's application requirements, deadlines, and language of instruction all in one place.
What if I need to attend a Studienkolleg?
A Studienkolleg is a preparatory course for international students whose school-leaving certificates aren't directly recognized in Germany. Completing one typically takes two semesters, so it will shift your timeline. Use the Study Eligibility Checker to find out early whether this applies to you.
Is January 15th the deadline for all summer semester programs?
January 15th is the standard deadline at most German universities for international applicants to the summer semester. That said, some programs close earlier, and applications through uni-assist often need to be submitted ahead of the university's own deadline. Always confirm the exact date with your chosen program.
What is the difference between the summer and winter semester?
The winter semester (October to March) is the main intake period at most German universities, with the widest selection of programs available. The summer semester (April to September) has fewer program options, but can be a good fit if your preferred program offers it or if you need extra time to prepare your application. The application process and requirements are the same for both, only the deadlines and start dates differ.
