Course description
The Saarbrücken Master's program in Physics offers a comprehensive education with both experimental and theoretical modules. Students delve into quantum mechanics and static physics, gaining a solid foundation in theoretical physics. On the experimental side, they explore advanced concepts in solid-state physics and atomic physics. The program also encourages interdisciplinary learning. Students can choose non-physics electives to understand how physics applies to engineering, life sciences, or medicine. This broadens their perspective and equips them with versatile skills. Research is a core focus of the program. Students practice modern physics methods through research internships and collaborative projects. The master's thesis addresses current issues in biophysics, soft matter, solid-state and nanostructure physics, or quantum technologies. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in industry, research institutions, or public sectors. They can work in research and development, focusing on natural and engineering sciences like biotechnology, environmental technology, energy technology, optics, and medical technology. Opportunities also exist in academia, strategic management consulting, and information technology. Exceptional graduates may pursue a doctorate and an academic career. Physics spans vast domains, from astronomy to elementary particles, synthetic materials to living systems. Modern physics is defined by its approach—using targeted experiments, measurements, and

a prerequisite for admission is proof of sufficient language skills - usually B2 level according to the European Framework of Reference - for the specialized studies.
Qualification Requirements
Access to the consecutive master's degree program in physics requires: 1. A bachelor's degree or equivalent university degree with a focus on physics or a physics-related subject 2. the particular suitability for the master's degree. This is usually determined by a bachelor's degree with an overall grade of 2.5 or better or an aptitude test. The physics course requires specialist skills in the areas of mechanics, electrodynamics and optics, thermodynamics and statistics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and elementary particle physics and quantum mechanics. The number of credit points acquired in lectures and exercises on experimental physics, theoretical physics and mathematical fundamentals should not be less than 30 CP each. At least 20 CP should have been acquired as part of physics internships.
Document Requirements
a copy of your high school diploma or university entrance qualification a certified list of all courses attended during the bachelor's or diploma studies, including grades a brief description of the content of the individual courses (excerpt from module handbook or similar) copies of all degrees obtained so far (Vordiplom, Diplom, Bachelor) Since the courses of the program are usually held in English, we require proof of your language skills (usually B2 level according to the European Framework of Reference). If you have a degree from a German school and have taken English classes for at least 6 years, up to and including the senior classes (last two years), please upload your high school diploma under the item "Language certificate". In all other cases we need a proof of the required language skills. If this proof is not available, a provisional admission can be granted on the condition that the required language skills are acquired within one semester, e.g. by taking a language course that concludes with the B2 level. The details of two reference persons (e.g. university lecturers or employers) who know you and your work well. We will ask these individuals (via email) to upload a letter of reference for you. To help you, we have put together some instructions (Pdf in English) on the form of reference letters.
