Course description

The English master's degree in physics builds on the foundational knowledge from the bachelor's program, offering advanced insights rooted in contemporary research. Emphasizing research methods, independent and responsible action, strategic planning, and critical evaluation of scientific findings, the program aims to equip students for independent scientific work. Completing this master's degree also prepares students for doctoral studies. Students benefit from access to cutting-edge research through institutions like the Center for Optical Quantum Technologies (ZOQ) and the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). Collaborations with organizations such as the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) provide opportunities to engage in current research projects.

Prior to commencing their studies, all applicants who completed their first degree at a non-German-language institution must provide proof of sufficient German language skills. This applies both to German-language and bilingual German / English-language master's degree programs. The page German language proficiency contains information about which German language certificates are accepted. Applicants who have a foreign university degree but who have acquired their higher education entry qualification (e.g., Abitur) at a German-language institution can simply submit this qualification (i.e., the transcript of records for the Abitur).

Qualification Requirements

a bachelor’s degree in physics from a German or European university OR a bachelor’s degree in another mathematics/physics subject comparable to the curriculum of the consecutive bachelor’s degree in physics proficiency in English

Document Requirements

Degree certificate or provisional Transcript of Records: Please highlight the courses, which are mandatory for admission (see admission 3 FAKULTÄT FÜR WIRTSCHAFTS- UND SOZIALWISSENSCHAFTEN requirements). If you are still studying when you apply and cannot yet provide a final certificate containing your grades, please submit your current Transcript of Records confirming your provisional grade point average (GPA). You will then need to submit your degree certificate by the end of the first semester of your master’s program. Please make sure, that the grading scale of your first degree is available on your degree certificate or the current transcript of records. If the grading scale is not clear on these documents, please submit another proof of the grading scale of your first degree. • Proof of English language skills: Applicants who, at the time of their application, are not able to prove their English language skills as listed above, must provide a proof of their registration for the next possible test date (e.g. print-out of the online registration). In this case, the deadline for late-submission of the test results will be postponed until 31 May. For late submission, use this link: www.wiso.uni-hamburg.de/en/studienbuero-volkswirtschaftslehre/studiengaenge/mscpep/mailformpep-language.html • Letter of motivation (500 words max., in English) • Two letters of recommendation from a university lecturer in your first degree program.
