Bionics

M.Sc. | Master of Science
Course description
The natural world serves as a rich source of engineering inspiration. This idea forms the foundation of bionics, a term that merges "biology" and "technics" (engineering). In English, this approach is often referred to as biomimetics. The essence of biomimetics lies in learning from nature. The aim is to grasp the principles and systems behind natural constructions and apply them to technological systems and devices. This process can begin with a biological observation and lead to new devices. For instance, the aerodynamics of the falling maple seed "helicopter" inspired one of our teams to develop a new, silent, low-speed wind turbine. Alternatively, it can start with a technological need. Consider the control of an autonomous car being overtaken by a large truck. Our biomimeticists drew inspiration from the lateral line system of fish, which senses flow, to create a new flow-sensing system. This system detects the bow-wave of an approaching truck, enabling the car to react promptly. In both cases, the study subjects and study programs focus on understanding and replicating nature's ingenuity. By observing and learning from the natural world, we can develop innovative solutions that address modern engineering challenges.
