Course description

This research-oriented Master’s program in Chinese Studies is tailored for graduates holding a B.A. in Sinology, Chinese Studies, or an equivalent qualification. It provides in-depth, small-group instruction by recognized experts in various fields. Students will explore both pre-modern and contemporary subjects, choosing one as their specialization. The program considers students' preferences for specific topics when determining the content of required elective classes. Continuous methodology classes enhance students' research capabilities, enabling them to conduct their own research for their master’s thesis. The program offers deep insights into China’s historical and current dynamics. Students will gain an excellent command of contemporary Standard Modern Chinese (advanced level) and Classical Chinese, along with basic Japanese language skills. First accredited in 2011, the Chinese Studies M.A. program has been re-accredited until 2027. Graduates (45 until 2017) are well-prepared for PhD-level research on China or for careers requiring analytical skills and in-depth knowledge of China’s history and current developments. These careers span cultural, political, social, and economic fields. The Department of Sinology in Würzburg supports students in special living circumstances, such as those with children, helping them achieve their study goals.
