Course description
The specialisation Microbial and Plant Biotechnology (MPBiotec) offers an in-depth, scientifically rigorous education focused on the biotechnological applications of microorganisms and plants. Students delve into the molecular biology of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, mastering modern techniques for their study and genetic modification. They also explore systems biology and bioinformatics, learning how to apply these concepts practically. This foundation supports applied research in several key areas. Students investigate infection mechanisms of bacterial and fungal pathogens affecting humans and plants, along with their resistance to antimicrobial drugs. They study the potential and optimization of microorganisms for synthesizing various useful compounds. Additionally, they examine how crop plants achieve high yields and resist abiotic and biotic stress factors, and develop strategies to enhance crop yield, quality, and stress resistance. Other research topics include the role of molecular chaperones in chloroplast biogenesis, genetic manipulation of microalgae, and system biological approaches to analyze the effects of perturbations on plant and microbial systems, with a focus on quantitative proteomics. In elective courses, students explore various biological and scientific disciplines while enhancing soft skills such as foreign languages, teamwork, and presentation techniques. This knowledge can be acquired after enrolment and is not required for admission.

Leaving certificate of the study courses and - if required - further documents showing final grade, duration of studies, and other performances, e.g. in form of an academic transcript, transcript of records, or equivalent proofs of performance. Description of contents of the courses listed in No. 1. Statement with reasons for the intended takingup of the studies and explanations of study aims. Presentation of professional and personal development (curriculum vitae), if applicable, with descriptions of practical knowledge and experience. Recommendation letters of at least 2 university/college lecturers. The recommendation letters should include statement on how well the applicant completed his/her studies in relation to other candidates of the course of studies.
