Course description
What do we gather when we collect? What remains unseen? How do museum practices shape our understanding of the world? The minor in Museum Studies at Leuphana tackles these questions from various angles. It blends critical museology, transcultural art history, memory studies, provenance research, and cultural organization concepts. This program lays the theoretical groundwork for engaging with humanity’s tangible and intangible heritage, both contemporary and historical. Students gain practical insights from museum and cultural heritage experts. The curriculum addresses pressing issues like decolonization, restitution, memory, representation, participation, and accessibility, especially relevant in the museum sector. It’s tailored for those intrigued by museums as hubs of knowledge production, negotiation, and transformation, and who wish to explore culture's role in modern societies. Whether your interest lies in museums, cultural organizations, exhibition spaces, galleries, private collections, memorial sites, or archival institutions, the cultural sector offers diverse career paths.
