Course description
The MA Turcology programme at JGU Mainz offers an in-depth curriculum in general and comparative Turcology. This includes linguistics, philology, and literary studies. The programme spans four semesters, with seven modules and 120 ETCS credits. From the beginning, it blends advanced theoretical knowledge with practical methodological skills. Each of the three consecutive linguistics modules covers structural knowledge in a Turkic language, or alternatively a Mongolic or Tungusic language, depending on the course schedule. These modules also include a seminar on linguistic theory and methodology, which can cover various subdisciplines like typology, dialectology, language contact, historical linguistics, and grammaticalization. Additionally, a research-oriented seminar focuses on specific techniques in areas like fieldwork, transcription, corpus linguistics, or quantitative methods, allowing for individual or group projects. The modules on Turkic Literature and Culture consist of a lecture that provides theoretical content and an accompanying seminar for detailed examination and discussion of selected topics. An elective module allows students to focus on a specific Turcological area or to enhance their methodological, theoretical, or practical skills.
