Life in Tübingen is all about the university, officially called Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, which is one of the oldest in the country dating back to 1477. Seven faculties including theology, law, medicine, and humanities offer over 335 degree programs. The city has a huge number of bookshops, and regular music and film festivals.

The university and its hospital are the biggest employers in Tübingen with around 10,000 employees. Two technology parks have been built in order to encourage the growth of the biotechnology and medical technology industries. Companies here are closely linked to the university. Other industries in the city with both new and traditional companies include engineering, toolmaking, and textiles.
