Heidenheim an der Brenz is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, not far from the border with Bavaria, and is home to around 50,000 people, many of whom speak the Swabian dialect. The city is a major center for turbine and paper manufacturing, hosts a popular opera festival, and is overlooked by Hellenstein Castle, one of many important historical buildings in the urban area.

A compact city of just under 50,000 people, Heidenheim an der Brenz has a student population of around 2,400, all of whom study at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University. Despite its small size, the city offers many cultural highlights, including the Opernfestspiele Heidenheim, which sees opera performances throughout the summer. There are numerous museums and music venues for students to explore.

The Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University is fairly small but well-regarded, and it offers courses in business administration, social sciences, and engineering at bachelor level. Work and study in this city are somewhat intertwined via 900 partner companies and organizations in what the school calls its "dual system". International exchanges are also routine aspects of the student experience.

Courses are taught in German, but bridge years are available, offering a year of German tuition to prepare international students so that language isn't a barrier to admission. Following their courses, students tend to move quickly into employment, with engineering and business administration both popular career categories.
