Semester Ticket in Germany: Everything Students Need to Know

Your first semester fee in Germany pays for more than paperwork. Somewhere inside that number is a ticket for buses, trams, and regional trains. At most universities, it is the Deutschland-Semesterticket, and it is valid across the whole country. For winter semester 2026/27, it costs €37.80 a month, or €226.80 per semester (a semester is typically 6 months).

You usually do not buy it yourself. It comes with your enrollment. This guide explains what the ticket covers, what it costs, and the few cases where things work differently.

What Is a Semester Ticket?

A semester ticket is a discounted travel pass for students enrolled at German universities. It is part of the registration you complete at the start of each semester. The ticket lets you use public transport in a set area for the whole semester. A semester lasts about six months. The ticket covers buses, trams, subways, S-Bahn, and regional trains.

The Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket) changed the picture. Since January 2026, it has cost €63 a month. It allows unlimited travel on local and regional transport across Germany. Many universities now offer a student version, the Deutschland-Semesterticket, as their semester ticket. With it, you can cross state borders on regional trains and buses without buying another ticket.

How Does the Semester Ticket Work?

1. Automatic inclusion: At most universities in Germany, the semester ticket is part of your semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag). This is the fee you pay each semester to enroll or re-enroll. You do not buy the ticket separately. Once your payment goes through, the ticket is yours.

   A few universities work differently. Some have no semester ticket at all. Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria use their own state student ticket models. Check with your university or its AStA (the student union) before you plan your budget.

2. Coverage: The Deutschland-Semesterticket is valid on local and regional transport across Germany. Older regional semester tickets are different. Their area is agreed between your university and local transport companies. It usually covers your city or region.

3. Usage: Most Deutschland-Semestertickets are digital and live in a transport app. Always carry an official photo ID with it. At some universities, a screenshot of the ticket is not accepted. The ticket is personal, so you cannot take a bike or another person with you for free.

4. Validity: The ticket is valid for the whole semester, with unlimited travel in its area. If you leave university (exmatriculation), it stops being valid.

The details depend on your university and local transport company. Most follow the same basic order.

How Much Does a Semester Ticket Cost?

The Deutschland-Semesterticket has one price across Germany. For winter semester 2026/27, it costs €226.80 per semester. That works out to €37.80 a month.

This amount is part of your semester contribution. The rest of that fee usually pays for student services and the student union. So your full semester contribution is higher than the ticket alone. How the 60% Rule Works

The student price is tied to the regular Deutschlandticket. It is always 60% of the Deutschlandticket price. When one goes up, the other follows.

In January 2026, the Deutschlandticket rose from €58 to €63 a month. Students felt it later. Up to summer semester 2026, they still paid €34.80 a month, or €208.80 per semester. The delay has a reason. A price increase must be announced eight months before the semester starts.

Who Is Eligible for the Semester Ticket?

The semester ticket is for students enrolled at participating universities. Where students have chosen the Deutschland-Semesterticket, every enrolled student pays for it. This applies whether you use it or not. It is called the solidarity model. Students on leave of absence usually cannot get the ticket. Terms vary, so check the details with your university.

What to Keep in Mind

1. Check coverage areas: Know exactly where your ticket is valid. Every university's ticket is different. Traveling outside its area without a valid ticket can get you fined. An ICE ride counts as outside, even on the Deutschland-Semesterticket.

2. Replacement policies: Lost your phone or student ID? Ask your university or transport company how to get a replacement. Keep your app login details safe, because a digital ticket is tied to your account.

3. Refunds when you leave: If you leave university during the semester, ask about a refund. Some universities refund only full unused months.

4. Additional discounts: Some tickets come with extra discounts for long-distance travel or with local partner businesses.
