Visa-free entry into Germany

Guide for visa-free students

How to convert your entry into a German residence permit

Are you from a visa-free country and planning to study in Germany? This guide helps you prepare your documents, navigate the process, and know exactly what to do before and after you arrive.

Expatrio Germany Visa Free Countries

Before you come to Germany, you must decide when to get your visa

If you are from a country that does not require a visa upon arrival, you can enter Germany and stay for up to 90 days.
If you wish to stay for longer than 90 days, you have two options to handle your immigration process:
Tip: It’s best to secure your place at a university, Studienkolleg, or language school well before you travel to Germany.

Before arrival

Before arrival: Some students choose to apply for a Student Visa (Type D) from the German embassy in their home country. This can offer peace of mind, but remember: even with this visa, you must still get your residence permit from the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners’ office) in Germany before your visa expires.

After arrival

After arrival: Many students prefer to arrive first and then apply locally for their residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde during their first 90 days in Germany.

After arriving in Germany

If you entered Germany visa-free, you have up to 90 days to apply for your student residence permit. Here’s what to do first:

icn-step-1

Get a German SIM card

Stay connected for banking, appointments, and university communication. You can find some popular and affordable SIM providers here.

icn-step-2

Proof of Address

It's best to have your official address in Germany and register your address (Anmeldung) at the Bürgeramt. This will give you your Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate).

icn-step-3

Open a Bank Account

Open a German Bank Account. You'll need one for your daily finances, as well as  for things like your phone bill and Health Insurance payments.

Some great options are listed here that you can open without a visa.

Some visa-free countries are elgible to open a free Bank Account with Expatrio without proof of residency (visa or residence permit)

These include:
Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea (South Korea), New Zealand, the USA.

icn-step-4

Activate your products

Health Insurance:  Activate your Health Insurance via the Expatrio User Portal as soon as you get to Germany.

Blocked Account: We recommend you do not activate your Blocked Account until after your visa appointment, as you will need to show sufficient proof of funds at this appointment.

Tip

Note: If you have a Blocked Account with our banking partner Aion, you can activate your account when you arrive in Germany, but should choose a future payout start month (a maximum of three months in the future).

This means your funds will remain blocked and sufficient for your visa appointment, but you can already start using your Expatrio Bank Account.

In some cases, the Ausländerbehörde may accept your already-used Blocked Account when applying for your residence permit, even if it has been active for several months.

icn-step-5

Schedule your visa appointment

Before your 90-day visa-free period ends, schedule an appointment at the Ausländerbehörde to apply for your residence permit. Bring all required documents, pay the fees, and complete the process to legalize your stay in Germany.

You can find your country's missions on the German Federal Foreign Office website.
