Guide for visa-free students
Are you from a visa-free country and planning to study in Germany? This guide helps you prepare your documents, navigate the process, and know exactly what to do before and after you arrive.
Before arrival: Some students choose to apply for a Student Visa (Type D) from the German embassy in their home country. This can offer peace of mind, but remember: even with this visa, you must still get your residence permit from the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners’ office) in Germany before your visa expires.
After arrival: Many students prefer to arrive first and then apply locally for their residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde during their first 90 days in Germany.

Health Insurance: Activate your Health Insurance via the Expatrio User Portal as soon as you get to Germany.
Blocked Account: We recommend you do not activate your Blocked Account until after your visa appointment, as you will need to show sufficient proof of funds at this appointment.
Note: If you have a Blocked Account with our banking partner Aion, you can activate your account when you arrive in Germany, but should choose a future payout start month (a maximum of three months in the future).
This means your funds will remain blocked and sufficient for your visa appointment, but you can already start using your Expatrio Bank Account.
In some cases, the Ausländerbehörde may accept your already-used Blocked Account when applying for your residence permit, even if it has been active for several months.
Before your 90-day visa-free period ends, schedule an appointment at the Ausländerbehörde to apply for your residence permit. Bring all required documents, pay the fees, and complete the process to legalize your stay in Germany.
You can find your country's missions on the German Federal Foreign Office website.
