Zittau

A city of wealth and refuge on the Polish and Czech borders

Located in the state of Saxony, Zittau is as close as a German city can be to the borders of Czechia and Poland. In the middle ages, it was famously wealthy, gaining the nickname Die Reiche for its riches. While the Reformation raged, it provided refuge to thousands of protestants and retains a welcoming attitude towards outsiders.

Situated in south-eastern Germany, Zittau has a population of just over 25,000, and about 3,500 students study there. The city is blessed with some beautiful architecture, including the famous Flower Clock, Salt House, and the opulent City Hall, and it is also linked to popular spa resorts via light rail connections.

Studying and Working in Zittau

Zittau has a couple of universities. The smallest is the International Graduate School (IHI), which focuses on biodiversity and general ecological research. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) is far larger and has a national reputation for management, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and social studies.

Both universities cater for non-German students (especially the very cosmopolitan IHI). All courses at HSZG will require a language qualification, and the International Office can suggest suitable partners for preparatory courses. After studying, graduates can expect opportunities in tourism, rail engineering, and sustainable energy. And during their studies, students can expect plenty of ways to play sport, explore the Zittauer Gebirge mountains, or visit Czech or Polish cities.
