Located in the German state North Rhine-Westphalia, Hagen is a mid-sized city positioned where the rivers Ruhr, Lenne, Volme, and Ennepe meet. Although now a sprawling industrial city, Hagen retains hints of the past in its architecture, towers, and churches.
Hagen is home to the FernUniversität a distance-learning institution with around 75,000 enrolled including 7,100 international students. There is also a campus of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences in Hagen with around 2,500 students with 300 being from outside of Germany. Hagen has eight museums and historical centers offering art and displays of the area's and the earth's history.
FernUniversität is the only state-funded distance-education university in Germany. The average age of the FernUniversity students is 37.9, and degrees from Fern are equal to any from a traditional university. The majority of students take courses in Economics or Cultural and Social Sciences. At the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences campus, there are Departments of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Technical Management.

With a long history in textile, steel, and paper manufacture, today Hagen retains these industries, and chemicals, auto parts, and pollution-abatement equipment are now also produced here.
