Furtwangen's small University of Applied Sciences (HFU) enrolls around 3,000 students and offers a surprisingly diverse variety of degrees. Far removed from traditional clock-making, students can study business information systems, electronic engineering, media studies or international business.
Those from other overseas are welcome to apply, with students from 90 countries enrolling at any given time. Visitors can choose to spend time learning German, or they can begin English language degrees in management, "smart" technology, biomedical engineering or consultancy - both at Bachelor's and Master's levels.
In terms of careers, the university runs a useful Innovation and Research Center, and regional companies work closely with the HFU Job Market portal. This links the university to local companies in sectors like microelectronics or precision engineering, while regular career fairs allow students to meet potential employers face-to-face.
