Understanding the costs

Why is Germany free?

Public universities abolished university fees in 2014. Education is a public good. You only pay a semester contribution (€150-400) which includes a public transport ticket.

Baden-Wurttemberg exception

One state charges €1,500/semester for non-EU students since 2017. Still far cheaper than alternatives. Other 15 states remain free.

Financing your studies

Even though university fees are zero, Germany requires proof you can cover living costs. You'll deposit €11,904 into a blocked account for your student visaβ€”this money is yours, released monthly (€992/mo) to cover rent, food, and transport. Part-time work (20hrs/week) can supplement this significantly.

Cost FAQ

Students who chose Germany

I ran the numbers carefully before deciding. Even including living costs, Germany was less than half what I'd pay in the UK. Three years later, I graduated debt-free with a job offer.

The EU Blue Card was the game-changer. 21 months after starting my first job, I had permanent residency. My friends in the US are still waiting for H1B lottery results.
