The University of Design Schwäbisch Gmünd (Hochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd, or simply HfG) makes a great effort to avoid specific artistic aspects and focuses on the teaching of design foundations. All degree courses cover the scientific principles and knowledge behind design decisions. The university has a long history of excellence in design and is dedicated to innovative teaching and design methods.
The School of Drawing was originally founded in 1776, which developed over the years into a vocational school and added focuses on precious metals and industrial design. This small university has around 700 students and a graduation rate of 98% attributed to the high level of personal attention to students. There are five bachelor's degree courses available. HfG also offers a master's degree course in Strategic Design. The extensive library has over 22,000 media items, including books and videos for research.
Study programs focus on various aspects of design, including Interaction Design, Communication Design, and Product Design. Research projects are based on interaction, communication, and product design. Projects include innovative ergonomics, sustainable design, and digital media design. The university provides opportunities for professional experience and design research. MA courses offer involvement with complex design subjects and theoretical studies of design topics. HfG holds regular workshop weeks where students can share ideas and work with tutors and industry experts.
Internationals studying for more than one year in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg will have to pay a €1,500 tuition fee per semester.
